Description
Professor Tanya Steel of Harvard Extension School gave a lecture titled, “Flowers: a Japanese Tradition Seen Through the Art of Rimpa Masters”

The Rimpa/Rinpa style is from the Momoyama Period (1568-1615) to modern times. It is inspired by nature, flowers and seasonal changes and is harmonious. “For everything to be in harmony, it must be with the grain of harmony.”

Professor Steel showed slides on various forms of Rimpa, covering 400 years. Throughout the artwork, whether it be on a screen, scroll, fan, or lacquer ware; simplicity, asymmetric balance and stylization were the consistent characteristics of this art form, as it is in our own Ikebana flower arrangements.
