Description
Joint Program with Sogetsu Massachusetts Branch
Soho Sakai, Riji, of the Sogetsu School conducted an all-day bamboo workshop.
Thirty-six participants signed up. Soho sensei demonstrated the use of the Japanese saw and chisel to cut pockets out of fresh green bamboo to make containers. She also demonstrated how bamboo can be split into strips using a bamboo stripper. She then made several arrangements using the bamboo containers she made. Garden hydrangea, dahlias, miscanthus, Solomon seal were used and she also made a Kakebana (hanging wall) arrangement using the split bamboo as lines.
In the morning members learned to make their own bamboo containers using the Japanese saw and chisel. They learned how to drill holes to insert the bamboo strips to make lines. After lunch they used their self-made containers to make arrangements using fresh greens and flowers.
It was a hands-on workshop in which members worked in pairs and learned the valuable skill of using tools not otherwise used frequently.
